Frequently Asked Questions
Starting therapy often comes with questions, and that's completely normal. Whether you're wondering what to expect, how online therapy works, or if we're the right fit, I hope you'll find the answers you're looking for here. If you don't see your question, please don't hesitate to reach out. I'm always happy to help.
What can therapy help with?I work with women, mothers, caregivers, and families navigating trauma, anxiety, parenting challenges, attachment concerns, life transitions, emotional overwhelm, and relationship difficulties. Therapy is also a space to better understand yourself, build coping skills, and create lasting change.
Do you offer online therapy?Yes. I provide secure virtual therapy for clients throughout Utah and Idaho. Online therapy offers the flexibility to receive support from the comfort and privacy of your own home while still building a meaningful therapeutic relationship.
What happens during the first session?Your first appointment is an opportunity for us to get to know one another. We'll talk about what's bringing you to therapy, your goals, your history, and any questions you have about the process. My goal is to create a space where you feel comfortable, supported, and never rushed.
How long are therapy sessions? Both initial assessments and ongoing therapy sessions are approximately 50–55 minutes.
What is your approach to therapy? My approach is trauma-informed, attachment-based, collaborative, and strengths-focused. I integrate evidence-informed approaches like CBT, DBT skills, and Trust-Based Relational Intervention® (TBRI®), always tailoring therapy to your individual needs rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach.
Do you work with parents?Absolutely. I enjoy supporting parents through the many joys and challenges that come with raising children. Whether you're navigating everyday parenting stress, attachment concerns, foster care, adoption, or simply trying to parent while managing your own healing, therapy can provide practical tools and compassionate support.
Do you work with foster and adoptive families?Yes. In addition to my professional experience, I also have lived experience as a foster and adoptive parent. I understand that these journeys often include unique challenges, transitions, grief, attachment needs, and moments of incredible resilience. My goal is to provide a supportive space that honors your family's story.
Do I need to have experienced "big" trauma for therapy to help? Not at all. Trauma isn't defined only by major events. Many people seek therapy because they're feeling overwhelmed, stuck, disconnected, or weighed down by experiences that have accumulated over time. You don't have to justify your pain to deserve support.
How do I know if therapy is right for me?You don't need to be in crisis to benefit from therapy. If you're feeling overwhelmed, noticing patterns you'd like to change, struggling in relationships, or simply longing for a space where you can process life's challenges, therapy may be a helpful next step.
Do you accept insurance?I am a self-pay practice and do not bill insurance directly. However, many clients use out-of-network benefits, Health Savings Accounts (HSA), Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA), or services like Thrizer to help offset the cost of therapy. You can learn more on my Fees & Insurance page.
Can I use my HSA or FSA?In many cases, yes. Many HSA and FSA plans allow you to use pre-tax funds to pay for therapy. I encourage you to check with your specific plan administrator for details about your benefits.
What is a superbill?A superbill is a detailed receipt that you can submit to your insurance company if you have out-of-network mental health benefits. While reimbursement is never guaranteed, many clients receive partial reimbursement depending on their plan.
How often should I come to therapy? The frequency of therapy depends on your goals, needs, and season of life. Many clients begin with weekly sessions and adjust over time as they make progress. We'll work together to determine a schedule that feels supportive and sustainable.
Is everything we discuss confidential?Yes. Your privacy is incredibly important. Therapy is confidential except in specific situations required by law, such as concerns about immediate safety or abuse. We'll review confidentiality and answer any questions during your first appointment.
What if I'm nervous about starting therapy? That's completely understandable. Starting therapy can feel vulnerable, especially if it's your first time or you've had difficult experiences in the past. My goal is to create a warm, compassionate space where you can move at a pace that feels comfortable for you. You don't have to have everything figured out before you begin.
